Global Change Research

Global environmental changes and the complex dependency of human to the Earth’s natural system and resources pose a significant challenge to the human society in embracing the sustainable paradigm. The said challenge is great for developing countries, which are more vulnerable to changes in the environment, where sufficient investment in terms of financial resources, scientific and technical inputs is scare. Thus the area for Global Change Research (GCR) proposes to undertake research on the regional aspect of environmental change, assess impacts and vulnerabilities to such changes for policy-makers, and enhance the scientific capacities in addressing the complex nature of environmental change and degradation through a variety of capacity building programmes. GCR would undertake the effort to mobilize resources for research programs on environmental changes. A few priority areas where GCR would venture are:

  • Conduct vulnerability assessment of natural and social system in response to climate change impact at river basins and at the watershed level.

  • Conduct workshops and multi stakeholders’ consultation for a multi–criteria decision for addressing climate change attributes

  • Undertake awareness and capacity building of user groups, scientific community, NGOs and the Government.

  • Demonstrate technologies, including traditional technologies and innovative approaches to address linkages between global environment issues and national development challenges.

  • Develop community’s capacities to plan and implement gender-equitable mitigation strategies and post disaster reconstruction/sustainable recovery.

GCR effort is essentially a regional approach to global change with a research agenda of direct relevance for societies to elucidate the challenges caused by global change for carbon/energy, food, water and health and to understand the human driven changes in these systems.
